Modern Foreign Languages

FRENCH & GERMAN
Students are able to choose at least one Modern Foreign Language at KS4 from either French or German. It will also be possible to study both languages.
In both languages you will develop and, of course, add to language learnt in Key Stage 3, learning new vocabulary and extending your knowledge of both the foreign language and the country. You will be able to communicate in both formal and informal situations, across a wide range of topics. You will also explore important issues of interest to young adults. Throughout the course there will be opportunities to use television, videos, ICT and work with the Foreign Language Assistant and hopefully further opportunities to visit the country of the language you are studying.
The majority of pupils will follow the EDEXCEL GCSE course in either French, German or both. This is a Linear course and will consist of the following components:
- Listening and understanding 20%
- Speaking (2 activities) 30%
- Reading and understanding 20%
- Writing (2 written tasks in controlled conditions) 30%
Candidates will be entered at either Foundation or Higher level in each skill area, according to individual strengths. During the two year course, pupils will study the following themes:
- Media and Culture
- Sport and Leisure
- Travel and Tourism
- Business, work and employment
- Centre – devised option
Pupils, for whom a GCSE course in a foreign language seems inappropriate, can follow an Entry Level Course, subject to numbers. This again covers the four main language skills. Pupils successfully completing the Entry Level Course will be awarded with a certificate.
